While Barstow is known as a transportation hub with highways 15 and 40 intersecting in the city, Barstow has come into its own and now offers much more to its residents.  Barstow is home to many unique industries and is a gateway to travelers going to or coming back from Las Vegas.  Barstow also offers some amazing real estate bargains.

For many years, Barstow was simply thought of as a stopping point for travelers and trains.  The BNSF Railway operates a large rail yard.  The Union Pacific Railroad runs thrugh town and the Marine Corps Logistics Base is nearby as is the Fort Irwin Military Reservation. Miners also came to Calico and Daggett, both of which are near Barstow, after the discovery of silver in the mid 1800s.

Today, while Barstow's economy still depends much on this history of people and trains passing through the city, the town now boasts a population estimated to be approaching 25,000 people.

Barstow still ranks among the poorest cities in California which means that housing median prices are significantly below the state average.  For real estate buyers without a great deal of money, this is one of California's most affordable real estate markets.

Land in the Barstow region is still in plentiful supply and this is one region where large areas of land can be utilized for solar power farms, or other large scale industrial uses.

For travelers on their way to or coming back from Las Vegas, Barstown is a town brimming full of fast food restaurants to tempt their palate.  For residents, Barstow offers a smorgasboard of restaurant choices for its home buyers.

There are great things planned in the future for Barstow, including three casinos, a Wal-mart distribution center, more retail shops and additional lodging accomodations.
